Alaska
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Alaska is 8.9¢ per gallon, which is 15.1¢ lower than your home state (Wyoming: 24.0¢/gal). Lowest diesel tax rate in the nation; no state sales tax on fuel. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Alaska participates in IRP; limited road network; registration through Alaska DMV. Alaska business license required; no separate state motor carrier permit for most operations. Your IRP registration covers operating in Alaska as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Alaska is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit; limited availability due to isolated road network.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit available for frequent haulers. Permits required for loads exceeding 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, or 105,500 lbs GVW. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat endorsement required; limited hazmat routes due to sparse road network; some restrictions on Dalton Highway. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Alaska's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Limited weigh stations; main stations on Parks Highway and Glenn Highway. Bypass programs available: PrePass available at select locations. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
