IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Massachusetts is 24.0¢ per gallon, which is the same as your home state (Wyoming: 24.0¢/gal). Includes excise tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Massachusetts participates in IRP; registration through MassDOT RMV. Massachusetts DPU certificate required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Massachusetts as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Massachusetts is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $40 for temporary registration.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Massachusetts: Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90); Tobin Memorial Bridge; tunnels (Ted Williams, Sumner, Callahan). Mass Turnpike truck tolls: $5-$25 for full-length depending on axles; all-electronic tolling; E-ZPass or pay-by-plate.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $40; annual permit: $200; MassDOT Highway Division permits. Strict height restrictions on Boston-area overpasses and tunnels; Storrow Drive prohibited for trucks; permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; strict restrictions through Boston tunnels; Ted Williams Tunnel allows hazmat, Sumner/Callahan restricted; designated alternative routes. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Massachusetts's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on I-90, I-84, I-91; PrePass expanded to Massachusetts. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
