Ohio
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Ohio is 47.0¢ per gallon, which is 27.1¢ lower than your home state (Pennsylvania: 74.1¢/gal). Includes excise tax; above-average rate. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Ohio participates in IRP; registration through Ohio BMV. Ohio PUCO operating authority required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Ohio as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Ohio is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $45 for temporary trip permit; available online or at BMV.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Ohio: Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90): 241 miles across northern Ohio. Ohio Turnpike full-length 5-axle truck toll: ~$58.75 (E-ZPass) / ~$74 (cash); 2.7% increase effective January 1, 2026; E-ZPass strongly recommended.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; ODOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs; separate Ohio Turnpike permits for oversize on Turnpike. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions on Ohio Turnpike for certain hazmat classes; designated routes through Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati metros. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Ohio's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-71, I-75, I-77, I-80/90; Ohio Turnpike has own enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
