New Jersey
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in New Jersey is 56.1¢ per gallon, which is 18.0¢ lower than your home state (Pennsylvania: 74.1¢/gal). Rate increased 4.2 cents Jan 1, 2026; includes petroleum products gross receipts tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
New Jersey participates in IRP; registration through NJ MVC. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in New Jersey as long as it is listed on your cab card. If New Jersey is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for temporary registration; available through MVC.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in New Jersey: New Jersey Turnpike (I-95); Garden State Parkway; Atlantic City Expressway; Port Authority crossings (GW Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing). NJ Turnpike full-length truck toll: $30-$80+ depending on axles and classification; GW Bridge: $16+ (E-ZPass) / $24+ (toll-by-mail) per truck; 3% toll increase effective January 1, 2026 (NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway); Port Authority eliminated truck volume discount July 2025.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit: $100; NJ DOT permits. Strict size restrictions due to dense infrastructure; many bridges and overpasses with low clearances; permits through NJ DOT Bureau of Freight. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; strict routing through NJ Turnpike (inner vs outer roadway); no hazmat in Lincoln/Holland Tunnels; designated bridge crossings only; placard requirements enforced. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check New Jersey's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on NJ Turnpike, I-78, I-80, I-287; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
