IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Colorado is 32.5¢ per gallon, which is 14.5¢ lower than your home state (Ohio: 47.0¢/gal). Includes excise tax; moderate rate. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Colorado participates in IRP; registration through CDOR Taxpayer Service Division. Colorado motor carrier permit required for intrastate carriers; PUC oversight for some operations. Your IRP registration covers operating in Colorado as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Colorado is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $45 for 72-hour trip permit; available online.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Colorado: E-470 (Denver beltway); Northwest Parkway; I-25 Express Lanes; US-36 Express Lanes. E-470 truck tolls $5-$15 depending on distance; Express Lanes use dynamic pricing $1-$15; ExpressToll transponder recommended.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $50; super-load review required for extreme dimensions. Permits through CDOT; mountain corridor restrictions on I-70; chain law in effect seasonally. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal requirements plus Colorado-specific hazmat routing through Eisenhower Tunnel restrictions (no hazmat through tunnel); alternative routes required. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Colorado's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Ports of entry on major highways; Dumont station on I-70; Monument station on I-25. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze; Colorado Ports of Entry PrePass program. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
