IFTA Fuel Tax

Alabama is your base plate state. The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate is 31.0¢ per gallon. Includes excise tax and inspection fee. As your base jurisdiction, Alabama collects IFTA taxes for all jurisdictions and distributes them accordingly based on miles traveled in each state.

Registration & Permits

Alabama participates in IRP; registration through ALDOR Motor Vehicle Division. Intrastate motor carrier certificate required for intrastate commerce; UCR registration required for interstate carriers. As your base plate state, your IRP cab card lists Alabama as the base jurisdiction. Fees are apportioned based on the percentage of miles traveled in each IRP jurisdiction.

Hazmat Requirements

FMCSA hazmat safety permit required; Alabama follows federal hazmat routing guidelines; no state-specific hazmat permit beyond federal requirements. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Alabama's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Multiple weigh stations on I-65, I-59, I-20; PrePass accepted at most locations. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
