Gestational Limit & Procedures

The gestational limit in Utah is 18 weeks of pregnancy (measured from the last menstrual period, unless otherwise specified). Procedures must be initiated before this limit is reached.

Legal Exceptions to Any Restrictions

18-week limit. Exceptions for life of the pregnant person, serious risk of substantial impairment, rape, incest, and fetal conditions incompatible with life.

Mandatory Waiting Period & Counseling

Utah requires a mandatory waiting period of 72 hours between initial counseling and the procedure. A mandatory ultrasound is also required before the procedure.

Parental Involvement for Minors

Utah requires parental consent for minors seeking an abortion. A judicial bypass option is generally available for minors who cannot involve a parent.

Medication Abortion Access

Medication abortion access in Utah is restricted. Mifepristone or misoprostol may only be dispensed in a clinical setting, or may be prohibited entirely if the state's ban covers medication abortion. Telehealth abortion medication services are generally not available in states with near-total bans or early gestational limits.

Recent Legal Changes

Utah's 18-week limit remains in effect after courts blocked the state's trigger ban in 2022. The Utah Supreme Court ruled the state constitution provides some abortion protections. Litigation regarding the scope of those protections continued through 2025.
