Utah
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Utah is 37.9¢ per gallon, which is 13.4¢ higher than your home state (Missouri: 24.5¢/gal). Includes excise tax; recently increased. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Utah participates in IRP; registration through Utah State Tax Commission Motor Vehicle Division. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Utah as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Utah is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $35 for temporary trip permit; available at ports of entry.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Utah: Express lanes on I-15 in Salt Lake City metro area. I-15 Express Lanes: dynamic pricing; trucks generally restricted from express lanes; minimal toll impact for commercial vehicles.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $60; UDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs on interstate; higher weights on some state routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Salt Lake City metro and Wasatch Front corridor; some canyon route restrictions. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Utah's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Ports of entry on I-15, I-80, I-70; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
