Louisiana
Deadlines — Days to Register and Transfer License
When moving from Oregon to Louisiana, you must register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. You must also transfer your driver's license within 30 days. Plan to visit the Louisiana DMV promptly after your move.
What You'll Pay — Registration, Title, and Sales Tax
Registering your vehicle in Louisiana costs $20-$82 based on value. Title transfer fee is $68.50 (title transfer is required). Vehicle sales/use tax is 4.45% (plus local). Budget for these costs before your move.
Inspections — Safety, Emissions, or None
Louisiana requires both a safety inspection (Annual) and emissions testing (Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport, Lake Charles areas). You will need to pass both before or shortly after registering your vehicle. This is one of the stricter states for vehicle inspections.
Insurance Minimums — Liability Coverage Required
Louisiana requires minimum liability insurance of 25/50/25 (bodily injury per person / per accident / property damage, in thousands). Your current Oregon minimums are 25/50/20. You must update your insurance to meet Louisiana requirements before registering.
License Plates — Front, Rear, and Plate Transfer
Louisiana requires rear only plates (Oregon requires front and rear). Surrender out-of-state plates; new LA plates issued. You will need to surrender your Oregon plates and obtain new Louisiana plates.
