Deadlines — Days to Register and Transfer License

When moving from Oklahoma to Delaware, you must register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency. You must also transfer your driver's license within 60 days. Plan to visit the Delaware DMV promptly after your move.

What You'll Pay — Registration, Title, and Sales Tax

Registering your vehicle in Delaware costs $40. Title transfer fee is $55 (title transfer is required). Vehicle sales/use tax is 4.25% doc fee (no sales tax). Budget for these costs before your move.

Inspections — Safety, Emissions, or None

Delaware requires both a safety inspection (Biennial (new cars exempt 5 years)) and emissions testing (New Castle County biennial). You will need to pass both before or shortly after registering your vehicle. This is one of the stricter states for vehicle inspections.

Insurance Minimums — Liability Coverage Required

Delaware requires minimum liability insurance of 25/50/10 (bodily injury per person / per accident / property damage, in thousands). Your current Oklahoma minimums are 25/50/25. You must update your insurance to meet Delaware requirements before registering.

License Plates — Front, Rear, and Plate Transfer

Delaware requires rear only plates (Oklahoma requires rear only). Surrender out-of-state plates; new DE plates issued. You will need to surrender your Oklahoma plates and obtain new Delaware plates.
