Deadlines — Days to Register and Transfer License

When moving from Maryland to New York, you must register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. You must also transfer your driver's license within 30 days. Plan to visit the New York DMV promptly after your move.

Registering your vehicle in New York costs $26-$140 based on weight (biennial). Title transfer fee is $50 (title transfer is required). Vehicle sales/use tax is 4% (plus local up to 8.875%). Budget for these costs before your move.

Inspections — Safety, Emissions, or None

New York requires both a safety inspection (Annual) and emissions testing (Statewide annual OBD inspection). You will need to pass both before or shortly after registering your vehicle. This is one of the stricter states for vehicle inspections.

Insurance Minimums — Liability Coverage Required

New York requires minimum liability insurance of 25/50/10 (bodily injury per person / per accident / property damage, in thousands). Your current Maryland minimums are 30/60/15. You must update your insurance to meet New York requirements before registering.

License Plates — Front, Rear, and Plate Transfer

New York requires both front and rear plates (Maryland requires front and rear). Surrender out-of-state plates; new NY plates issued. You will need to surrender your Maryland plates and obtain new New York plates.
