What You'll Pay — Registration, Title, and Sales Tax

Registering your vehicle in Maryland costs $241–$383 (2-year, weight-based; increased Jul 1, 2025). Title transfer fee is $100 (title transfer is required). Vehicle sales/use tax is 6%. Budget for these costs before your move.

Inspections — Safety, Emissions, or None

Maryland requires both a safety inspection (Upon transfer only (not recurring)) and emissions testing (Statewide VEIP program (most counties)). You will need to pass both before or shortly after registering your vehicle. This is one of the stricter states for vehicle inspections.

Insurance Minimums — Liability Coverage Required

License Plates — Front, Rear, and Plate Transfer

Maryland requires both front and rear plates (Iowa requires front and rear). Surrender out-of-state plates; new MD plates issued. You will need to surrender your Iowa plates and obtain new Maryland plates.
