Weight Limits
Kentucky interstate GVW limit: 80,000 lbs. Per-axle limits: Single axle 20,000 lbs, Tandem axle 34,000 lbs, Tridem axle 42,000 lbs. Federal bridge formula applies; many bridges have posted lower limits.
Size Limits
Height: 13 ft 6 in. Width: 8 ft 6 in. Trailer length: 53 ft (semitrailer). Overall combination length: 65 ft combination.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Overweight/over-dimensional permits through KYTC Division of Motor Carriers Fees: Single-trip: $30+; Annual: $60+. Texas oversize permits are not directly honored in Kentucky. You will need to obtain a Kentucky-specific permit for oversize/overweight loads. Apply online: https://transportation.ky.gov/Motor-Carriers/Pages/Over-Dimensional-Permits.aspx Enforcement: KSP enforcement; weigh stations; fines based on weight over limit.
Exemptions
Agricultural: Agricultural vehicles exempt; coal trucks allowed up to 126,000 lbs on designated routes with proper axle configuration. Timber/Forestry: Timber trucks allowed higher weights on designated state routes.
Seasonal Restrictions
Spring weight restrictions on county roads. Check with the state DOT for current postings and dates before planning your route.
