California interstate GVW limit: 80,000 lbs. Per-axle limits: Single axle 20,000 lbs, Tandem axle 34,000 lbs, Tridem axle 42,000 lbs. Federal bridge formula applies; California also uses its own permit weight table. Enforcement tolerance: No general tolerance; strict enforcement statewide.

Size Limits

Height: 14 ft. Width: 8 ft 6 in. Trailer length: 53 ft (semitrailer on STAA network). Overall combination length: 65 ft combination (non-STAA); no limit on STAA routes.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Transportation permits for oversize/overweight vehicles through Caltrans online system Fees: Single-trip: $16; Annual: $90. North Carolina oversize permits are not directly honored in California. You will need to obtain a California-specific permit for oversize/overweight loads. Apply online: https://dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/transportation-permits Enforcement: CHP weigh stations (every commercial vehicle must stop); fines $1+ per pound overweight.

Exemptions

Agricultural: Agricultural vehicles exempt on local roads; cotton module movers have special provisions. Timber/Forestry: Logging trucks allowed higher weights on designated roads with permit.
