Michigan
Weight Limits
Michigan interstate GVW limit: 80,000 lbs. State highways allow up to 164,000 lbs with proper axle configuration. Per-axle limits: Single axle 18,000 lbs, Tandem axle 32,000 lbs, Tridem axle 42,000 lbs. Michigan uses its own axle weight table instead of federal bridge formula; allows higher GVW with additional axles up to 164,000 lbs on state roads. Enforcement tolerance: No tolerance during spring restrictions; limited tolerance otherwise.
Size Limits
Height: 13 ft 6 in. Width: 8 ft 6 in. Trailer length: 53 ft (semitrailer). Overall combination length: No overall limit for tractor-semitrailer.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Oversize/overweight permits through MDOT online system; special permits for loads exceeding Michigan weight table Fees: Single-trip: $50+; Annual: $100+. Arkansas oversize permits are not directly honored in Michigan. You will need to obtain a Michigan-specific permit for oversize/overweight loads. Apply online: https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/business/permits/oversize-overweight Enforcement: MDOT and MSP enforcement; aggressive spring thaw enforcement; fines escalate rapidly with overweight amount.
Exemptions
Agricultural: Agricultural vehicles exempt on state roads; farm equipment has width exemptions. Timber/Forestry: Timber trucks allowed up to 164,000 lbs with proper axle configuration on designated routes.
Seasonal Restrictions
Spring weight restrictions (typically mid-February through May) reduce axle weights by 35% on flexible pavements and 25% on rigid pavements; single-trip permits for overweight loads, loads exceeding 14 ft width, more than 11 axles, or 150 ft overall length are not issued on restricted routes during active restrictions. Check with the state DOT for current postings and dates before planning your route.
