The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in District of Columbia is 23.5¢ per gallon, which is 25.9¢ lower than your home state (Washington: 49.4¢/gal). DC participates in IFTA as a jurisdiction. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

DC participates in IRP; registration through DC DMV. DC commercial vehicle operating permit required for vehicles over 10,000 lbs; annual registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in District of Columbia as long as it is listed on your cab card. If District of Columbia is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for temporary permit; limited truck access in downtown core.

Toll facilities in District of Columbia: No toll roads within DC; nearby Virginia and Maryland tolls affect access routes.

Single-trip permit: $50; significant restrictions on truck routes through the District. Many streets restricted for trucks; designated truck routes only; height restrictions on Rock Creek Parkway and other routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Strict hazmat routing through DC; many streets prohibited for hazmat vehicles; specific corridors designated for hazmat transport. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check District of Columbia's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

No traditional weigh stations; enforcement through roving inspections; vehicle weight enforcement at key entry points. Bypass programs available: Not applicable. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
