Registration & Permits

New York participates in IRP; registration through NY DMV and NYSDOT. New York Highway Use Tax (HUT) required for trucks over 18,000 lbs; filed quarterly. Your IRP registration covers operating in New York as long as it is listed on your cab card. If New York is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $60 for temporary trip permit; HUT permit required simultaneously.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in New York: New York State Thruway (I-87/I-90); George Washington Bridge; Verrazano-Narrows Bridge; Tappan Zee/Mario Cuomo Bridge; multiple NYC bridges and tunnels. Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $35; annual permit: $150; NYSDOT Special Hauling Permits. Strict height restrictions on NYC-area parkways (no trucks); permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; strict NYC-area restrictions; no hazmat through Holland or Lincoln Tunnels; George Washington Bridge upper level only for hazmat; NYSDOT hazmat routing program. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check New York's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on NYS Thruway, I-81, I-86, I-87; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass at select locations, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
