The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in New Mexico is 21.0¢ per gallon, which is 10.5¢ lower than your home state (Utah: 31.5¢/gal). Low rate; includes excise and special fuel tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

New Mexico participates in IRP; registration through NM TRD Motor Vehicle Division. New Mexico weight distance tax required for vehicles over 26,000 lbs; rate varies by weight class. Your IRP registration covers operating in New Mexico as long as it is listed on your cab card. If New Mexico is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for 72-hour temporary trip permit; weight distance tax permit also required.

Single-trip oversize permit: $25; overweight permit: $25 plus per-ton/mile fees for loads over 86,400 lbs; State Police escort $300/day if required. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs; extreme loads may require State Police escort. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Federal hazmat requirements; WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) routes designated for nuclear waste transport; restrictions through Albuquerque and Santa Fe. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check New Mexico's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Ports of entry on I-10, I-25, I-40; mandatory stop for all CMVs. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
