Illinois
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Illinois is 73.8¢ per gallon, which is 35.8¢ higher than your home state (Oregon: 38.0¢/gal). Includes motor fuel tax and underground storage tank fee; rate adjusted semiannually. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Illinois participates in IRP; registration through Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Commerce Commission authority required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Illinois as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Illinois is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $40 for temporary registration; available through SOS office.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Illinois: Illinois Tollway system: I-88 (Reagan Tollway), I-90 (Jane Addams Tollway), I-94/294 (Tri-State Tollway), I-355 (Veterans Memorial Tollway), I-390 (Elgin-O'Hare). I-PASS required for discounted rates; truck tolls range $2-$18 per plaza depending on axles; full-system truck toll can exceed $40.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual oversize permit: $300; routine overweight permits available. IDOT permit office handles all permits; average permit cost ~$55; escorts required for extreme loads. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; Illinois-specific routing through Chicago metro area; restrictions on certain tunnels and bridges. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Illinois's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Multiple stations on I-80, I-55, I-57, I-74, I-94; active enforcement throughout state. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
