Registration & Permits

Montana participates in IRP; registration through Montana DOJ Motor Vehicle Division. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Montana as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Montana is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $25 for temporary trip permit; available at ports of entry.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; MDT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs on interstate (higher on some state routes). Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; limited routing restrictions due to rural nature; some restrictions through Glacier/Yellowstone areas. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Montana's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Ports of entry on I-90, I-15, I-94; mandatory stop for all CMVs unless bypass. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
