IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Louisiana is 20.0¢ per gallon, which is 20.0¢ lower than your home state (New York: 40.0¢/gal). Low excise rate; below average. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Louisiana participates in IRP; registration through LA OMV. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Louisiana as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Louisiana is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for 48-hour temporary trip permit; available online through instant permits.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Louisiana: Lake Pontchartrain Causeway; LA-1 toll (Port Fourchon); Crescent City Connection (tolls ended 2013). Causeway: ~$5 per truck axle; LA-1 toll: $3-$5 for trucks.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; LADOTD permit office. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; Louisiana-specific routing for petrochemical corridor along Mississippi River; port area restrictions. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Louisiana's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-10, I-20, I-12, I-49; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
