Connecticut
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Connecticut is 48.9¢ per gallon, which is 8.9¢ higher than your home state (New York: 40.0¢/gal). Includes petroleum gross receipts tax; above-average rate. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Connecticut participates in IRP; registration through CT DMV Commercial Vehicle Unit. Connecticut motor carrier certificate required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Connecticut as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Connecticut is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $60 for temporary operating authority; valid 72 hours.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Connecticut: No traditional toll roads currently; truck-only tolls have been proposed; highway use fees under consideration. Connecticut is phasing in a highway use fee for large trucks (HUF) starting at 2.5 cents/mile for trucks over 26,000 lbs.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $35; annual permit: $150; permits through CT DOT. Strict size limits on Merritt Parkway (no commercial vehicles); height restrictions on older bridges; permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements apply; restricted hazmat routes through Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven metro areas; no hazmat on Merritt Parkway. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Connecticut's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-95, I-84, I-91; portable enforcement units active. Bypass programs available: PrePass available. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
