IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Indiana is 61.0¢ per gallon, which is 40.0¢ higher than your home state (New Mexico: 21.0¢/gal). Includes surcharge tax; above-average rate. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Indiana participates in IRP; registration through Indiana BMV. No separate state operating permit required; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Indiana as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Indiana is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit; available online through IN BMV.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Indiana: Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90 across northern Indiana); managed by Indiana Finance Authority. Indiana Toll Road truck toll ~$32 for full-length crossing (157 miles); E-ZPass discounts available; cash rates higher.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $200; INDOT permit system. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 60 ft single vehicle, 80,000 lbs; winter weight restrictions possible. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; Indiana follows FHWA routing; restrictions on Indiana Toll Road for certain hazmat classes. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Indiana's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-65, I-70, I-69, I-80/90; Borman Expressway enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
