IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Hawaii is 16.0¢ per gallon, which is 5.0¢ lower than your home state (New Mexico: 21.0¢/gal). Hawaii does not participate in IFTA; state fuel tax applies separately; county surcharges vary. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Hawaii does not participate in IRP; separate state registration required; limited interstate trucking due to island geography. Hawaii PUC motor carrier certificate required for intrastate for-hire operations. Your IRP registration covers operating in Hawaii as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Hawaii is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: Not applicable for interstate; local permits through county offices.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $25; issued by Hawaii DOT. Island roads have significant restrictions; many bridges weight-limited; narrow roads on outer islands. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

State-specific hazmat regulations; port-to-destination routing restrictions on Oahu; limited hazmat transport between islands. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Hawaii's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Limited weigh stations; primary enforcement on Oahu. Bypass programs available: Not applicable. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
