IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Maine is 31.2¢ per gallon, which is 9.0¢ higher than your home state (New Hampshire: 22.2¢/gal). Includes excise tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Maine participates in IRP; registration through Maine BMV. No separate state operating permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Maine as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Maine is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary operating authority.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Maine: Maine Turnpike (I-95/I-495): 109 miles from Kittery to Augusta. Maine Turnpike truck tolls: ~$10-$30 for full-length depending on axles; E-ZPass accepted; cash accepted.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit: $100; Maine DOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 100,000 lbs (Maine allows higher weights on some routes). Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Portland urban area and Turnpike tunnels. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Maine's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-95 and Maine Turnpike; PrePass recently expanded to Maine (2025). Bypass programs available: PrePass (new 2025), Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
