IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Georgia is 37.3¢ per gallon, which is 15.1¢ higher than your home state (New Hampshire: 22.2¢/gal). Rate increased Q1 2026; includes motor fuel excise tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Georgia participates in IRP; registration through Georgia DOR Motor Vehicle Division. Georgia motor carrier certificate required for intrastate for-hire operations; issued by Georgia PSC. Your IRP registration covers operating in Georgia as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Georgia is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $35 for temporary trip permit; available at weigh stations or online.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Georgia: GA 400 (toll removed 2024); Peach Pass express lanes on I-85, I-75, I-285 in Atlanta metro. Peach Pass express lanes: dynamic pricing $1-$15 for trucks; no cash toll option on express lanes.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; Georgia DOT Permit Office. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 60 ft single vehicle, 80,000 lbs. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; Georgia follows FHWA routing guidelines; restrictions through downtown Atlanta. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Georgia's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Multiple weigh stations on I-75, I-85, I-95, I-16, I-20; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
