IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in California is 97.1¢ per gallon, which is 74.9¢ higher than your home state (New Hampshire: 22.2¢/gal). Highest in nation; includes excise tax plus sales tax on diesel; rate adjusts annually. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

California participates in IRP; registration through CA DMV Commercial Vehicle Section. California motor carrier permit (MCP) required: $150/year; separate CARB compliance required for emissions. CARB Clean Truck Check annual compliance fee: $32.13 (increased from $31.18 effective January 1, 2026; CPI-adjusted annually). Your IRP registration covers operating in California as long as it is listed on your cab card. If California is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for 4-day temporary trip permit; $100 for 20-day permit.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in California: Multiple toll roads and express lanes in Southern California (73, 133, 241, 261); Bay Area bridges; FasTrak system. Truck toll rates vary; Golden Gate Bridge ~$9 (FasTrak); Bay Bridge ~$7.50+ (FasTrak); SoCal toll roads $2-$12 depending on route and time. Bay Area 7 state-owned bridges: +$0.50 per axle for 3+ axle trucks effective January 1, 2026 (continues annually through 2030).

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $16; annual permit: $90; extra-legal loads require additional review. CALTRANS permits required; height limit 14 ft, width 8.5 ft, length 65 ft (single), weight 80,000 lbs; pilot cars required for wide loads. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

California-specific hazmat routing designations; CARB diesel particulate requirements; additional state-level hazmat registration through CHP. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check California's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Extensive network of weigh stations and agricultural inspection stations at all border crossings; major stations on I-5, I-10, I-15, I-80. Bypass programs available: PrePass at select locations; California-specific bypass criteria. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
