South Carolina
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in South Carolina is 28.0¢ per gallon, which is 3.5¢ higher than your home state (Missouri: 24.5¢/gal). Includes excise tax; rate increased through Infrastructure Maintenance Act. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
South Carolina participates in IRP; registration through SC DMV. South Carolina PSC certificate for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in South Carolina as long as it is listed on your cab card. If South Carolina is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit; available online.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in South Carolina: Southern Connector (Greenville); Cross Island Parkway (Hilton Head); limited toll facilities. Southern Connector: $1-$3 for trucks; Cross Island: $1.25; minimal toll impact.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; SCDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions near Charleston port area; SC follows FHWA routing. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check South Carolina's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-95, I-85, I-77, I-26, I-20; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
