Michigan
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Michigan is 52.4¢ per gallon, which is 27.9¢ higher than your home state (Missouri: 24.5¢/gal). Rate increased January 1, 2026 by 21.4 cents (from 31.0 to 52.4 cents/gallon); major restructuring via Public Acts 17-20 of 2025; sales tax on fuel eliminated; rate now uniform for gas and diesel. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Michigan participates in IRP; registration through Michigan SOS. Michigan intrastate motor carrier permit through MDOT; separate from federal authority. Your IRP registration covers operating in Michigan as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Michigan is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $40 for 30-day temporary registration.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Michigan: Mackinac Bridge (I-75); International Bridge (Sault Ste. Marie); Blue Water Bridge tolls on US side. Mackinac Bridge: $10-$20 per truck depending on axles; international bridge tolls vary; no transponder system, cash and card accepted.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit: $100; MDOT permit office. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs on interstate (up to 164,000 lbs on some state routes with permit). Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Detroit-Windsor Tunnel (no hazmat); Ambassador Bridge allows hazmat; Blue Water Bridge alternative for hazmat. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Michigan's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-94, I-96, I-69, I-75; active enforcement; seasonal weight restrictions during spring thaw. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
