IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Minnesota is 32.6¢ per gallon, which is 1.4¢ higher than your home state (Maine: 31.2¢/gal). Rate increased Q1 2026; includes excise tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Minnesota participates in IRP; registration through MN DVS. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Minnesota as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Minnesota is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit; available at weigh stations or online.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Minnesota: MnPASS express lanes on I-394 and I-35W in Twin Cities metro. MnPASS express lanes: dynamic pricing $0.25-$8.00; trucks generally not permitted in MnPASS lanes.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $60; MnDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs; spring weight restrictions on many routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; Minnesota follows FHWA routing guidelines; some restrictions in Twin Cities metro. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Minnesota's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-94, I-35, I-90; PrePass expanded to Minnesota. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
