IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Wisconsin is 32.9¢ per gallon, which is 6.4¢ higher than your home state (Massachusetts: 26.5¢/gal). Includes excise tax and petroleum inspection fee. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Wisconsin participates in IRP; registration through WisDOT DMV. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Wisconsin as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Wisconsin is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit; available online.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $90; WisDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs; spring weight restrictions on many county roads. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Milwaukee metro area. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Wisconsin's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
