IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Pennsylvania is 74.1¢ per gallon, which is 54.1¢ higher than your home state (Louisiana: 20.0¢/gal). Second-highest in nation; includes Oil Company Franchise Tax; rate adjusts annually. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Pennsylvania participates in IRP; registration through PennDOT. Pennsylvania PUC certificate required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Pennsylvania as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Pennsylvania is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for temporary registration; available through PennDOT.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76/I-276): 360 miles; most expensive toll road in the US by many measures. PA Turnpike most expensive toll road in the US by most measures; 4% toll increase effective January 4, 2026 (lowest increase since 2014); E-ZPass strongly recommended; Toll By Plate at 2x the E-ZPass rate.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit: $150; PennDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 60 ft single, 80,000 lbs; separate permits for PA Turnpike. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; no hazmat through PA Turnpike tunnels (Allegheny, Tuscarora, Kittatinny, Blue Mountain); alternative routes add significant mileage. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Pennsylvania's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-80, I-81, I-78, I-79; PA Turnpike has own enforcement at toll plazas. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
