This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

West Virginia participates in IRP; registration through WV DMV. West Virginia PSC certificate for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in West Virginia as long as it is listed on your cab card. If West Virginia is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $30 for temporary trip permit.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in West Virginia: West Virginia Turnpike (I-77): 88 miles through southern WV; Wheeling area toll bridge. WV Turnpike truck toll: ~$6-$12 for full-length depending on axles; E-ZPass accepted.

Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $50; WV DOH permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs; mountainous terrain limits many routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through WV Turnpike tunnels (Memorial Tunnel closed); mountain routing considerations. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check West Virginia's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on I-77, I-79, I-64, I-81; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
