IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Florida is 41.0¢ per gallon, which is 15.0¢ higher than your home state (Kansas: 26.0¢/gal). Includes state and local option taxes; above-average rate. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Florida participates in IRP; registration through FLHSMV. No separate state motor carrier permit required; UCR registration required for interstate carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Florida as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Florida is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $45 for 10-day temporary tag; available at county tax collector offices.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Florida: Extensive toll network: Florida Turnpike, Alligator Alley (I-75), Selmon Expressway, Sawgrass Expressway, Homestead Extension, Beachline, numerous express lanes. Florida Turnpike full-length truck toll ~$40+; SunPass recommended; toll-by-plate available at higher rate; Alligator Alley ~$3.75/axle.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $60; permits through FDOT. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 75 ft long, or 80,000 lbs; summer restrictions during hurricane season for extreme loads. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; Florida Highway Patrol enforces routing; specific restrictions through Miami tunnels and key bridges. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Florida's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Numerous weigh stations and agricultural inspection stations throughout the state; major stations on I-75, I-95, I-10, I-4. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze; Florida agricultural bypass for inspected carriers. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
