IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Arizona is 26.0¢ per gallon, which is the same as your home state (Kansas: 26.0¢/gal). Flat rate; no variable component. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Arizona participates in IRP; registration through ADOT Motor Vehicle Division. No state-specific operating permit required beyond federal authority; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Arizona as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Arizona is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for 72-hour trip permit; available at ports of entry or online.
Toll Roads
Toll facilities in Arizona: No toll roads currently; some express lanes under consideration in Phoenix metro.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $60; super-load permits for extreme dimensions. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 65 ft single vehicle, 80,000 lbs GVW. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat safety permit required; ADOT designates specific hazmat routes through Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Arizona's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Ports of entry on all major highways entering Arizona; stations on I-10, I-17, I-40, I-8. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze; Arizona HELP program. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
