The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Washington is 58.4¢ per gallon, which is 4.4¢ higher than your home state (Indiana: 54.0¢/gal). Includes excise tax; above-average rate; Climate Commitment Act carbon pricing may add more. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Washington participates in IRP; registration through WA DOL. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Washington as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Washington is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $36 for 3-day trip permit ($25 permit + $11 service fee); available online through DOL.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Washington: SR 520 bridge; I-405 Express Toll Lanes; SR 167 HOT Lanes; Tacoma Narrows Bridge; Good To Go! system. SR 520 truck toll: $5-$15 (dynamic); Tacoma Narrows Bridge: $6 per truck; I-405 Express Lanes: dynamic pricing; Good To Go! transponder required.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $30; annual permit: $100; WSDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 105,500 lbs; seasonal restrictions in mountain passes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Seattle metro tunnels; SR 99 Tunnel has specific hazmat restrictions. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Washington's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on I-5, I-90, I-82; Washington State Patrol enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze; Washington Green Light program. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
