IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Nevada is 27.0¢ per gallon, which is 27.0¢ lower than your home state (Indiana: 54.0¢/gal). Includes excise tax and county fuel taxes. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Nevada participates in IRP; registration through Nevada DMV. Nevada PUC motor carrier permit required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Nevada as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Nevada is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $35 for temporary trip permit; available at ports of entry.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; NDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs; some routes allow higher weights. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Las Vegas metro and Hoover Dam area; no hazmat on Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge for certain classes. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Nevada's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Ports of entry on I-80, I-15, US-93, US-95; mandatory entry. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
