South Dakota
IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in South Dakota is 28.0¢ per gallon, which is 4.5¢ lower than your home state (Idaho: 32.5¢/gal). Includes excise tax. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
South Dakota participates in IRP; registration through SD DOR Motor Vehicle Division. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in South Dakota as long as it is listed on your cab card. If South Dakota is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $25 for temporary trip permit; available at ports of entry.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $15; annual permit: $50; SDDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs on interstate; higher allowed on some state routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements apply; minimal state-specific restrictions due to rural nature. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check South Dakota's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Ports of entry on I-90, I-29; SD Port of Entry bypass for qualified carriers. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze; South Dakota port of entry program. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
