IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Oregon is 38.0¢ per gallon, which is 5.5¢ higher than your home state (Iowa: 32.5¢/gal). Oregon uses weight-mile tax instead of fuel tax for heavy trucks over 26,000 lbs; this rate applies to light vehicles only. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Oregon participates in IRP; registration through ODOT Motor Carrier Transportation Division. Oregon weight-mile tax required for trucks over 26,000 lbs; rate based on weight and miles; unique in the nation. Your IRP registration covers operating in Oregon as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Oregon is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $43 for heavy motor vehicle trip permit; valid for 10 days; required for all non-Oregon CMVs.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Oregon: No traditional toll roads; I-205 tolling proposed; congestion pricing for Portland metro under development. Oregon is developing congestion pricing for I-5 and I-205 in Portland metro area; not yet implemented as of 2026.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $30; annual permit: $100; ODOT Motor Carrier permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs on interstate; higher weights allowed on some state routes. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Portland metro and along Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Oregon's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Extensive port of entry network; Green Light program for PrePass-equipped vehicles; stations on I-5, I-84, I-82. Bypass programs available: PrePass (Green Light program), Drivewyze; Oregon pioneered weigh station bypass. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
