The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Maryland is 46.8¢ per gallon, which is 11.4¢ higher than your home state (Georgia: 35.4¢/gal). Includes excise tax and sales/use tax on diesel. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Maryland participates in IRP; registration through Maryland MVA. Maryland PSC operating authority required for intrastate for-hire carriers. Your IRP registration covers operating in Maryland as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Maryland is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $50 for temporary registration; available through MVA.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Maryland: Multiple toll facilities: I-95 (JFK Memorial Highway), Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, Fort McHenry Tunnel, Bay Bridge, ICC (MD 200), Nice/Middleton Bridge. Fort McHenry Tunnel: $12+ per truck; Bay Bridge: $8 per truck axle; ICC (MD 200): $5-$20 depending on distance; E-ZPass required for most; DriveEzMD.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $25; annual permit: $125; SHA permits through MDOT. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 55 ft single, 80,000 lbs; Baltimore Beltway has height restrictions. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; Maryland-specific tunnel restrictions (no hazmat in Baltimore Harbor or Fort McHenry tunnels); alternative routing required. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Maryland's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on I-95, I-70, I-81; active enforcement with mobile units. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
