IFTA Fuel Tax
The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Nebraska is 31.8¢ per gallon, which is 17.4¢ lower than your home state (Connecticut: 49.2¢/gal). Includes variable rate that adjusts semiannually. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Registration & Permits
Nebraska participates in IRP; registration through Nebraska DMV. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required. Your IRP registration covers operating in Nebraska as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Nebraska is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $25 for temporary trip permit.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $75; NDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 14.5 ft high, 75 ft long, 80,000 lbs on interstate. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.
Hazmat Requirements
Federal hazmat requirements apply; Nebraska follows FHWA routing guidelines. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Nebraska's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.
Weigh Stations & Bypass
Weigh stations on I-80, I-76, I-29; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
