The IFTA diesel fuel tax rate in Virginia is 32.7¢ per gallon, which is 4.2¢ higher than your home state (Arkansas: 28.5¢/gal). Includes excise tax; regional tax in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads adds more. This rate is reported on your quarterly IFTA return and net taxes owed or credited are calculated based on miles driven vs. fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

Registration & Permits

Virginia participates in IRP; registration through Virginia DMV. No separate state motor carrier permit; UCR registration required; Virginia charges road use fee for heavy vehicles. Your IRP registration covers operating in Virginia as long as it is listed on your cab card. If Virginia is not on your cab card, you will need a temporary trip permit: $40 for temporary trip permit; available online through DMV.

Toll Roads

Toll facilities in Virginia: Dulles Toll Road; Powhite Parkway; Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel; Elizabeth River Tunnels; I-66 Express Lanes; I-495 Express Lanes; I-95 Express Lanes; Route 895 Pocahontas Parkway. Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: $20+ per truck; I-495/I-95 Express Lanes: dynamic pricing up to $40+; Dulles Toll Road: $2-$6; E-ZPass required for express lanes.

Oversize/Overweight Permits

Single-trip permit: $20; annual permit: $100; VDOT permits. Permits required for loads over 8.5 ft wide, 13.5 ft high, 65 ft single, 80,000 lbs; restrictions through Northern Virginia corridor. Always obtain permits before entering the state with oversize or overweight loads, as fines for operating without proper permits can be substantial.

Hazmat Requirements

Federal hazmat requirements; restrictions through Hampton Roads tunnels (Monitor-Merrimac, Downtown, Midtown, HRBT); no hazmat through some tunnels; CBBT restrictions for certain classes. All drivers transporting hazardous materials must have a valid CDL with hazmat endorsement (HME), which requires a TSA background check. Check Virginia's specific routing requirements before hauling hazmat loads through the state.

Weigh Stations & Bypass

Weigh stations on I-81, I-95, I-64, I-77; active enforcement. Bypass programs available: PrePass, Drivewyze. Carriers with good safety records and proper credentials may qualify for bypass at equipped stations, saving time and fuel.
