EV Purchase Rebate & Tax Credits

District of Columbia offers a MODERATE benefit primarily through a sales tax exemption on qualifying EV purchases. See the sales tax section below for dollar value and MSRP eligibility limits.

Sales Tax Exemption on EV Purchase

DC exempts EVs from sales tax (6% rate), saving approximately $1,500–$2,400 on a typical EV purchase.

Home Charging Station Incentives

DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) offers rebates for Level 2 EV chargers for residents and businesses. Income-qualified residents may receive additional support.

Solar Tax Credit & Net Metering

District of Columbia does not offer a state solar income tax credit. Net metering: Net metering is available in DC. Pepco and Washington Gas customers can participate. Excess generation is credited at the retail rate.

HOV Lane Access for EVs

District of Columbia grants qualifying EVs access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes regardless of passenger count. Check your state DMV for the required clean-fuel vehicle decal or sticker to use this benefit.

Additional State Programs

DC also offers exemption from personal property tax for EVs and plug-in hybrids. HOV access on I-395 is available to EVs.
