EV Purchase Rebate & Tax Credits

New Jersey offers a MODERATE benefit primarily through a sales tax exemption on qualifying EV purchases. See the sales tax section below for dollar value and MSRP eligibility limits.

Sales Tax Exemption on EV Purchase

New Jersey exempts zero-emission vehicles (including BEVs) from the 6.625% state sales and use tax. On a $45,000 EV, this saves approximately $2,981.

Home Charging Station Incentives

NJ Board of Public Utilities' EV Charger Incentive Program offers rebates for residential Level 2 charger installation. PSE&G and JCP&L also have EV charging programs.

Solar Tax Credit & Net Metering

New Jersey does not offer a state solar income tax credit. Net metering: Net metering is available in New Jersey under NJSA 48:3-87. Excess generation is credited at the full retail rate for residential systems up to 2 MW. NJ has robust net metering policy.

HOV Lane Access for EVs

New Jersey grants qualifying EVs access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes regardless of passenger count. Check your state DMV for the required clean-fuel vehicle decal or sticker to use this benefit.

Additional State Programs

NJ CHARGE UP program has had various rebate amounts (up to $4,000) but has been subject to funding pauses. As of 2024, the sales tax exemption is the most reliable ongoing incentive. EVs also qualify for HOV lane access.
