EV Purchase Rebate & Tax Credits
Washington offers a MODERATE benefit primarily through a sales tax exemption on qualifying EV purchases. See the sales tax section below for dollar value and MSRP eligibility limits.
Sales Tax Exemption on EV Purchase
Washington exempts new EVs priced up to $45,000 MSRP from the 6.5% state sales tax (RCW 82.08.809). On a $42,000 EV, this saves approximately $2,730. EVs over $45,000 MSRP are not exempt.
Home Charging Station Incentives
Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light offer EV charger rebates up to $400. WA State Dept. of Commerce administers EVSE grants for workplaces and multifamily.
Solar Tax Credit & Net Metering
Washington does not offer a state solar income tax credit. Net metering: Net metering is available in Washington under RCW 80.60. Excess generation is credited at the full retail rate for residential systems up to 100 kW. Washington has robust net metering rules.
HOV Lane Access for EVs
Washington grants qualifying EVs access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes regardless of passenger count. Check your state DMV for the required clean-fuel vehicle decal or sticker to use this benefit.
Additional State Programs
Sales tax exemption applies at point of sale for qualifying EVs. HOV lane access available with a clean alternative fuel vehicle decal. Washington also has strong utility rebate programs and goals under the Clean Energy Transformation Act.
