Permit Rules — Age, Training, Fees

Colorado permit type: Shall-Issue. Minimum age: 21. Training required: Yes. Non-resident permits are NOT available from Colorado. Must be 21+, complete handgun safety course, pass background check, Colorado resident, no felony convictions

Where You Cannot Carry (Even With a Valid Permit)

In Colorado, concealed carry is prohibited in the following locations: Schools, government buildings with security, public buildings with posted signs. Always check for posted signage and comply with all local restrictions. Federal gun-free zones (federal buildings, post offices, military installations) apply nationwide regardless of state permits.

Recent Law Changes to Know

HB24-1174 effective July 1, 2025: CCW applicants must complete an 8-hour in-person training course with live fire component within 1 year of application; renewal applicants must also demonstrate recent competency. Effective August 1, 2026: specified semi-automatic firearms will require a Firearm Safety Course Eligibility Card to purchase.
