California
Can I Carry Here?
California is a May-Issue jurisdiction and does NOT honor your Alaska permit. You would need to apply for a California permit to legally carry concealed here.
Permit Rules — Age, Training, Fees
California permit type: May-Issue. Minimum age: 21. Training required: Yes. Non-resident permits available (fee: Varies by county). Must be 21+, good cause (post-Bruen), 16-hour training course, pass background check, psychological evaluation in some counties
Where You Cannot Carry (Even With a Valid Permit)
In California, concealed carry is prohibited in the following locations: Schools, government buildings, airports, bars, amusement parks, hospitals, places of worship, public transit, parks, athletic events, financial institutions, polling places. Always check for posted signage and comply with all local restrictions. Federal gun-free zones (federal buildings, post offices, military installations) apply nationwide regardless of state permits.
Recent Law Changes to Know
SB 2 (2024) added extensive list of sensitive places where carry is prohibited; currently in litigation. AB 1078 (effective April 1, 2026) creates a non-resident CCW pathway requiring attestation of primary travel county, live-fire qualification, and background check.
